ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Accredited Calibration Services

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 specifies the general requirements for the competence to carry out calibrations. It covers calibration quality systems using standard methods, non-standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods.  The standard also defines the management and technical requirements. Management Requirements are primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the laboratory's quality management system. Technical Requirements includes factors that determine the correctness and reliability of the tests and calibrations performed by the laboratory. In a way, ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is to calibration laboratories what ISO 9001 is to manufacturers.

Accreditation serves as formal recognition that a laboratory has proven calibration laboratory compliance and competence in accordance with the requirements of the standard. While it is not necessary for a calibration laboratory to be accredited, many organizations require accreditation to perform calibrations. The ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation serves as proof of conformance to the requirements of the standard.

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited calibration laboratories have demonstrated technical proficiency and are able to produce accurate and repeatable calibration data. Laboratory accreditation bodies use the standard, item by item, to assess the calibration laboratory's ability to produce reliable calibration data including:

• Traceability to national standards (NIST Traceable)
• Technical competence of staff
• Equipment maintenance and calibration
• Quality assurance of calibration data
• Methods and Method Validation
• Handling and transport of calibration items
• Environmental conditions

Accredited laboratories are re-assessed on an annual basis to maintain their accreditation and are required to participate in regular proficiency testing programs to demonstrate technical competence.
