Registering Scales in Alabama

All weighing devices used for commerce must be registered with the Alabama Department of Agriculture - Weights and Measures on an annual basis.

On May 4th 2015 The Alabama Department of Agriculture, in accordance with statute 8-16-7 and rule 80-13-6, began using Registered Service Agents to perform inspections of weighing and measuring devices within the state.  Reports are filed electronically with the state by registered service agents only.  Only those persons who possess a valid Alabama Registered Serviceman's License is allowed to submit documents.  It is the responsibility of the device owner / operator to ensure the requirement is met to avoid any penalties.

1. Make sure that your scale is NTEP certified.  If your scale has previously been certified by the state of Alabama, you can skip this step.
2. Check your company registration by visiting The Department of Weights and Measures.  If you cannot remember your Business ID, search for your company registration here.
3. If you have not previously registered with the state of Alabama, click register your company.
4. Follow the on-screen directions, entering your credit card information to pay the fee for registration. The annual fee is around $29.
5. Print your registration certificate, or save the certificate.
6. Contact ACS Calibration at 334-792-0113, an Alabama Registered Serviceman Licensed Calibration Laboratory, for service.
7. ACS Calibration will calibrate your scales on-site at your location, or at our laboratory.
8. We will take care of the reports, including uploading the reports to the state website for registering scales in Alabama.
9. ACS Calibration will provide you with laminated copies of your certifications to keep with your scale, posted at your facility.
10. ACS Calibration will send a reminder when your calibrations are due the following year, making scheduling easier on you.  We want to develop long term relationships with our clients.
